Jordi Gomez stunned Chelsea with an 88th minute equaliser to earn a vital point from a draw at the DW Stadium. Just when Chelsea seemed to had began to build their momentum, they drop 2 vital points and failed to put pressure in the Manchester teams.
Frank Lampard returned to the Chelsea line-up for the first time in the last three games instead of Ramires who was out due to bruised leg. In the starting minutes of the first-half nothing has so far happened that would merit the description-“Good”. Chelsea began the game with majority of possession in the opening stages but the tempo was pedestrian which allowed the Wigan defense to enjoy a pretty comfortable first-half. The first attacking piece came from Chelsea in the 14th minute when Mata played to captain John Terry and took a shot from 30-yards but went a couple of yards wide. Ashley Cole played very poorly the starting 20 minutes with some miss-placed passing. Chelsea again came close to score in the 23rd minute when Bosingwa’s cross was headed away from the near post and Romeo volleys from 25 yards into the goal and Al-Habsi making a fine diving save to make sure that the ball stays out of the goal. Wigan makes an attack in the 32nd minute, when Wigan corner reaches Diame’s right foot and shoots from the left side of the box curls the wrong way and goes wide. A goal-scoring opportunity for Chelsea! With 6 minutes remaining to the half, Meireles cross reaches the Wigan box and Drogba dives ahead of his marker to head it just next to the bar. A good try from him. Penalty Claim in the 41st minute! Moses hammers the ball goalwards but gets deflected by hitting the arm of Ivanovic. Did he did for protecting his body or did it intentionally? There were boos from all round the corner as Wigan fans thought it to be a penalty. With only 1 minute of stoppage time remaining, Meireles volleyed towards the goal from outside the box which curled and went wide. A second later Wigan missed a simplest of the goal when the ball being rolled across the goal by Sammon and Moses arrives bit too late to turn it in. Half-time at DW stadium withChelsea still failing to score. In Chelsea’s last 3 games against Wigan, Chelsea have won all three and have scored 15-0.
Chelsea makes a tactical change with Romeo coming in for Kalou. AVB have now switched to attacking style of play after this half-time substitution. Figueroa tries a shot from a distance which is on target but is an easy save by Cech. Victor Moses beautifully dribbles the Chelsea defenders in the 52nd minute and then unleashed a shot which perhaps the least on target shot of the season! 3 minutes later, Kalou gets to the byline and pulls the ball back to Drogba whose flick flies just wide to the near post. Good effort. 14 minutes after half-time, Chelsea lead 1-0 from Sturridge strike. A superb cross from Ashley Cole finds Sturridge to the right who traps it wonderfully and fires a shot from his right-foot into the goal. The goal for which we all have been waiting for! Wigan 0 Chelsea 1. Chelsea seems to be much comfortable after the goal. Chlesea now introduce Obi Mikel for Mata to rest him for the Thursday match. MIRACLE for Chelsea! With 12 minutes remaining, Ivanovic’s back pass was too weak for Petr Cech but he comes first before Rodallega and his clearance doesn’t go very far and reaches Di Santo and with no keeper and 3 defenders in goal, he takes a shot to the goal but Ivanvoic the culprit, became the savior by heading the shot into corner. Malouda comes in for Sturridge. GOAL for Wigan! Di Santo passes Rodallega who bursts into the penalty area and tries to roll the ball towards the center but Petr Cech fails to intercept the ball as the ball bounces back of his arms and Gomez snatched a draw in the final remaining 2 minutes. Full-time a DW stadium. Its Wigan 1 Chelsea 1. A poor performance from Drogba, Ivanovic and Cech cost Chelsea to drop 2 vital points.
