At last!! First signing- Gary Cahill

At last !!!

Gary Cahill is finally on his way to Chelsea in a £7million deal after 17 days of agony. The England centre-half agreed a £23 million contract that runs until 2017 and headed south for a medical tonight. He had wanted £100,000 a week and at the start of the month Chelsea manager Andre Villa-Boas revealed they were a long way apart in their discussions. But after pulling out all the stops and the intervention of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, the offer was raised to £80,000 a week. Cahill was pulled out of Friday training by Bolton and had the first part of his medical tonight.  The defender could renew the centre-back partnership he has enjoyed with John Terry in the England side when Villas-Boas’s team visit Norwich next Saturday lunchtime.

It is a big move for Cahill, who had been fretting over the switch but was assured that he was always Chelsea’s first choice to join their shaky defence. Cahill, who will take his chances on not getting a regular game in the build-up to the Euro 2012 finals, is the first piece of a £150m spending spree by Villa-Boas over the next couple of transfer windows.

A strong defence at last?
