[In Pictures] Second-half goal saved AVB’s fate at Stamford….Its Chelsea 3 Bolton 0

Chelsea put their recent dismal run behind them and eased some of the pressure on Villas-Boas with their 8th successive league win over Bolton who are one off the bottom. Villas-Boas recalled Lampard, Ashley Cole and Michael Essien, who were controversially left out of Tuesday night’s Champions League defeat at Napoli, sparking further reports of dressing-room unrest.

‎A great day. A great match. An amazing win. And I loved my goal!!! Thank you Chelsea fans for all your support – we won’t let you down!!! You rule!!
David Luiz

Now will you give me chance??

Second-half goals from David Luiz, who curled in the opener after 48 minutes, a 61st minute close-range Didier Drogba header and a 79th minute volley lifted some of the gloom surrounding Stamford Bridge in recent weeks. The goals from Drogba and Lampard were both milestones too. Lampard’s was his 150th career league goal including his early spell at West Ham United, while Drogba’s made him Chelsea’s fourth all-time highest scorer with 151 in all competitions. Kalou almost nodded in goal number four for the home side in stoppage-time as Chelsea enjoyed a rare trouble-free final ten minutes.

“It was a good result and gets us back on track for Champions League qualification. It was an important three points and hopefully we can build on that for the future.”

-Villas-Boas told to Sky Sports

Chelsea will go clear of Arsenal in the race for the fourth spot in the Premier League if Tottenham defeats Arsenal today in the London derby. One thing’s for sure, though- There’s still plenty of Premier League life left in Lampard – even if question marks still loom large over the manager who doubted his footballing longevity.

My Thoughts on..

1) Do fast play works for Chelsea?

Chelsea played at a high tempo today, and it worked to great effect. All of their goals were scored due to quick build-up, and Bolton failed to cope with Juan Mata, Frank Lampard, Daniel Sturridge, Ramires and Didier Drogba. If Essien can stay fit and in good-form in that holding role, that particular strategy could be a possible solution for the team’s current problems.

2) Frank Lampard should have a bigger role

He also whacked in 11 crosses, five of which were accurate, thread in an accurate through ball and also sprayed three long balls. That’s playmaking ability not even Juan Mata, who grabbed an assist also, could manage. AVB said: “Lamps had a fantastic performance today, but there are six players competing for that position and I make decisions for the benefit of the team. Lamps had his chance today and competed very well. I think he should play with Essien inorder to win the next 12 games.

3) If Drogba is on form, Chelsea is on form…..

Drogba scored, hit the post, made two key passes, and had six shots on goal—all of which fatigued Bolton’s defence and paved the way for another goal. The 33-year-old Ivory Coast international is crucial for the Blues when he plays, Chelsea almost always win when he’s on form. With Torres becoming a flop and Sturridge showing inconsistency, I hope that Drogba never leaves Chelsea this summer…

4) Conclusion

Chelsea need a strong defense despite increased effort from Ivanovic and Luiz. Essien and Lampard is the spine of midfield and Drogba is the heart of attack. Chelsea need to put in faith in AVB and lastly FRANK and COLE should not leave “The Blues!!”

  1. saved him or prolonged the inevitable? I actually think given enough time, and the ability to buy (and mould) his own team, he’ll do well at Chelsea, but Roman doesn’t strike me as the sort of man who’s in it for the long run.

I don’t really understand why you guys don’t play a more high tempo game at times (similar to Liverpool where players were bought to play the quick pass and move game, but then they seemed to shape up to play the long ball; even without Carroll). I mean the players you guys have are not all old and slow, and never will be with the likes of Drogba, and Sturridge up front. You do of course also have Torres but something about the Chelsea system just doesn’t suit him. Maybe it is the fact that he isn’t the focal point of the team.

Mind you to a certain degree I hope you do keep playing a slow game, and AVB does get sacked…. but that’s just me hoping you guys will slip up and let us have that 4th place 😀

    • AVB can fully transform Chelsea fully with many new players…..but in the period of transformation, many Chelsea legends will leave Chelsea (Cole,Lampard and if Frank leaves Terry too will leave)…. Chelsea like to play aerial ball which does not suit Torres…He likes to hold the ball and dribble the opponent which is not a Chelsea style….But still, Meireles have adapted to the surrounding of Chelsea but why not Torres (don’t know why!!!) If he moves to Liverpool or the team which has a tempo like Liverpool, he will regain his success, which is very necessary for him right now after being removed from the Spain squad…By the way we will jump to 3rd position as Tottenham lost to Arsenal the other day!!
Liverpool can still turn around if they keep winning the last remaining games.. Congratulation for winning the Carling Cup!!!!

      • Meireles is a midfielder, his range of passing was always good, it shouldn’t be tricky for him to adapt his game.

The long ball may not be Torres’ game but he still gets the ball, his confidence just seems to be so low. He does need to be at a club that makes him the focus again, just to make sure he gets enough chances to put a few goals in and get going again.

We are now 7 points behind both you and Arsenal, but hopefully knowing that we are definitely in Europe one way or the other will unshackle us somewhat. The problem is that we once again failed to break down a team like Cardiff in 90 minutes (and again after 120). Still winning for the first time in 6 years was great.

      • Next week is crucial, with us facing Arsenal and Spurs facing United….. add to that so many things up in the air (how Spurs cope with that pitiful display, whether the whole AVB issue gets sorted or keeps affecting the players, whether the cup runs help us, and whether Arsenal implode again)….

        my heart says

        Man City
        Man U
        Chelsea
        Liverpool

        My mind says

Man U (they just have that ability to score late and keep doing it, Man City might just lack the title run in experience)
        Man City
        Spurs
        Chelsea
        Arsenal
        Liverpool

The thing is, if we’re not within easy shot of getting 4th with say 2 games to go, the fact that we already have a European place may work against us, (knowing that if we finish 6th we’ll still be in Europe may result in Arsenal getting that 5th spot). Until now Spurs have been chasing the top 2 without any pressure, losing two on the bounce could see them facing pressure of you lot behind them, and that can affect teams.

For us really we just need to turn the cup win into a positive, and people like Downing have to convert their cup performances into league ones.

This might actually be a stellar end of season run in.

      • You know what, this season is the most excited season I have watched in my entire life…At this exact day, with these many games remaining we easy knew who would win the Premier League…But this season, There are 3 teams battling for the 1st place and 3 teams battling for 4th place and Norwich- one of the promoted side still eyeing for the Europa spot…I have never seen such tough competition in my life and I never expected Manchester City to to play like this (by seeing the previous year)…
My heart and mind says it will be
        1.Man City
        2.Man Utd
        3.Chelsea
        4.Arsenal
        5.Liverpool/Tottenham
        6.Tottenham/Liverpool
        7.Norwich
        8.Newcastle
I am not sure whether Tottenham will finish 5th or 6th given the recent form and flop defending….
I hope this season ends with much unexpected thrills and miracles!!!!!!

      • Whatever AVB can do for Chelsea, he always needs time, maybe a few years. Unfortunately Abramovic is not the patient type of guy ..

“Chelsea like to play aerial ball whcih doesn’t suit torres”
Liverpool love playing aerial balls as well yet Torres was their best player ..
