Hazard is known for his creativity, speed, and technical ability and is described as a “fearless, explosive attacking midfielder who can change the game with a turn of pace or a dribble”. He has also been described as “a defender’s nightmare” and has earned critical acclaim for his playing style, which has led to the media, coaches, and players drawing comparisons to FIFA World Player of the Year winners Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Hazard is a Belgium international, having represented his nation at under-17 and under-19 level. Prior to starring for the senior team, he played on the under-17 team that qualified for the 2007 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship and 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Hazard made his senior international debut in November 2008, at the age of 17 years and 316 days, in a friendly match againstLuxembourg. Eden Hazard revealed on Monday night he would be joining Chelsea in a £35million deal – a massive statement of intent by the European champions.
Hazard announced on Twitter that he would be signing for Chelsea after weeks of talks with them, Manchester United and Manchester City.
The Lille playmaker, one of the most coveted players in Europe, will sign a 5 year deal at Stamford Bridge once details have been finalised.
It is an amazing coup for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who has not even appointed a manager for next season but is intent on rebuilding a team that finished only sixth in the Barclays Premier League. The deal is a clear indication that the west Londoners will challenge the might of the Manchester clubs, especially newly-crowned champions City and their Abu Dhabi owners.
Hazard, 21, is with the Belgium squad preparing for Saturday’s friendly against England at Wembley. City pulled out of the deal for Hazard last week because of his incredible salary demands, which are close to £200,000 a week, and his agent John Bico’s demands for £6m.
However, Chelsea are understood to have reached a compromise agreement with his representative. Hazard will play in a new-look Chelsea attack that is purpose built by Abramovich for the next manager. Juan Mata, Germany international Marko Marin, who will also be coming to Stamford Bridge from Werder Bremen in a £6m deal, and Hazard are being primed for the three advanced midfield positions to provide the ammunition for Fernando Torres. Hazard came to prominence with Lille during their 2010-11 title-winning season and has just been named Player of the Year in France for the second successive season. In an attempt to lure Hazard to Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson, who will now step up his attempts to sign Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund, had offered him the famous No 7 shirt vacated by Michael Owen. Chelsea’s owner wants to re-establish them as the best team in the country and this is part of his plan to create one of the most attacking teams in Europe.
Reacting to the developments, a Chelsea spokesman said: ‘As with all transfers, when we have something to announce, we will announce it in the usual way.’
L’Équipe and Eurosport both claim Hazard is close to agreeing a €40million Chelsea move complete with a five-year contract on €126,900 per week, while LOSC News – a twitter page providing Lille news – wrote: “Eden Hazard is to leave the Belgium squad to travel to London for a medical at #CFC’s Cobham training ground. The £35 million-rated Lille attacker is understood to have agreed personal terms with the Blues and is likely to sign for the Stamford Bridge club this week. Manchester United and Manchester City were also given permission to talk to Hazard, but the 21-year-old decided over the weekend to sign for Chelsea, finally bringing the end to the ongoing transfer saga.
“It’s a done deal,” a source said. “Hazard has made his choice and he will play for Chelsea next season.”
On Monday morning, the Belgian indicated that an announcement is imminent when he wrote on Twitter: “Good afternoon guys. I made up my mind. see you later. Thanks”. Saha then followed that tweet up by writing: “Apparently on his way to Chelseafc.”
Hazard was City’s primary close season target – he attended the Manchester derby in late April as a guest of the club before being shown around houses in the area. Chelsea’s hijacking of the transfer, however, means Mancini has been dealt a chilling snub and Hazard is now set for a move to Chelsea, where Blues owner Roman Abramovich is ready to fund a regeneration of the squad over the summer. The Ligue 1 player of the season is one of the most highly-rated talents in Europe and has been in stunning form, scoring 20 league goals and providing 22 assists.
