Rumor Watch – Mathieu Debuchy

Will this right-back issue ever end after releasing Jose Bosingwa?! Chelsea is now becoming busy even before the start of the transfer window with some interesting rumors. The only reason I am writing this post is because of one and only one culprit – Mathieu Debuchy!

Date of Birth     : 28 Jul 1985 (Age 26)

Place of Birth    : Fretin

Nationality         : France

Height               : 187 cm.

Position            : Defender

Squad Number  : 2

Mathieu Debuchy is a 5’9″ 26 year old, right-footed right back. He was born in Fretin, less than 15 kilometers away from the stadium where he now plies his trade for Lille OSC. He began his career playing for his hometown club Union Sportive Frétin before joining Lille at the age of eight. After spending a decade in Lille’s youth system, he was promoted to the senior team following the winter break of the 2003–04 season. Debuchy was given the number 33 shirt and simultaneously made his professional debut and first start on 31 January 2004 in a league match against Metz.

The following season, Debuchy switched to the number 2 and his playing time increased significantly. He appeared in 19 matches and scored three goals. His first professional goal came against Bordeaux. Debuchy scored the goal in the first minute of the match. Lille’s solid form that season resulted in the club finishing second in the league and, as a result, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Debuchy was also instrumental in Lille’s run to the Round of 16 in 2004–05 UEFA Cup where the club was eliminated by rival French club Auxerre.

Debuchy became a fixture in the starting eleven during the 2005–06 season. On 26 March 2006, he damaged knee ligaments in a league match against Strasbourg. The injury required surgery ruling him out for six months. As a result of the injury, Debuchy missed the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. A week after suffering the injury, on 4 April, but his quick recovery time earned him the nickname “Le Bionic Man” amongst supporters. Lille officials awarded Debuchy a contract extension until 2010. He has appeared in 288 games for Lille and is considered one of the best right backs in Ligue 1. Last season, he was an instrumental part in Lille’s Ligue 1 title and Coupe de France victories.

The 26-year-old won plaudits for his performances at Lille during the last campaign and was picked in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year. Against England, he was sound defensively and an ever-present outlet in attack. Could earn himself a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs over the next couple of weeks. Debuchy is incredibly pacy and as a former midfielder, he has an eye for crossing and is very comfortable joining the attack. He’s a lockdown defender who can close down wing players, and he’s known for his excellent blocking abilities as well.

Depending on who you believe, Debuchy is also being chased by the likes of Newcastle, Bayern Munich, and Valencia this summer and has a £7.5 million price tag, but this isn’t the first time teams have coveted his services.

Rating I would give him:

What do you think of him??
