Yesterday was a day were we all were hoping to see our new acquisitions this summer – Eden Hazard and Marko Marin in Chelsea shirts! Well I think the waiting for all of ous has been over after just starting it (unlike the Torres scenario!) as they were on the score-sheet yesterday against Seattle Sounders along with Lukaku among the scorers with a 2-4 victory as our 1st friendly went underway.
Chelsea lined up in their game of the World Football Challenge with notable absences – the likes of John Terry, Fernando Torres and Raul Meireles all being given extra time off because of their Euro 2012 commitments. Sounders defence and forced a fine save from goalkeeper Bryan Meredith. But two minutes later Meredith was unable to stop striker Roman Lukaku from netting the first goal. Hazard, the £35 million signing from Lille, was arguably the standout player during the first half in which all six goal hit the back of the net. The 21-year-old Belgian showed a variety of neat touches and sharp turns which caused the Sounders plenty of headaches, whilst he marked his first Chelsea appearance by cutting in from the left hand side and releasing a right-footed shot that deflected off Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and into the net.
Joining Hazard on the score-sheet was Marko Marin. Having cost just £6m from Werder Bremen, Marin (23) opened his Blues account with a goal that was almost an exact carbon copy of Hazard’s. Marin collected possession in a wide left position, which allowed him to cut inside onto his favoured right foot. Once in the box the German had no trouble pulling the trigger, and his scuffed shot trickled into the Seattle goal. Chelsea restored their two goal advantage shortly before half-time when Lukaku scored again, a cool finish after rounding the keeper.
The second half, the Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, made seven changes to the computer with the presence of Essien, Lampard and Gary Cahill, making it disappear and team play were limited to that transcurriesen minutes.
The Sounders tried to keep fighting with Fernandez-director of the game was the best player in the game, but ultimately did not make the reward. At the conclusion of the game, everyone was satisfied, especially Di Matteo, who said the team played well at this stage of the preparation phase in which they find themselves and new acquisitions showed their class in the official debut.
He [Hazard] can have a great impact in the Premier League next season. He has great qualities and you can see that everyday in training,’ admitted the Chelsea boss.
‘It is good for Marko and Eden to score in their first game for the club and it was good to see they have a good understanding with their new team-mates. ‘I’m pleased with the game and performance – it was everything we were looking for from our first pre-season game, it was a good work out.’‘I felt we showed good energy, the new players integrated in well and showed the talent coming through can be the future of this club.’
