Substitute Romelu Lukaku is hoping to forge a career for himself at Chelsea this season. But he didn’t do himself any favours last night, seeing his vital penalty saved as the Blues lost the shootout 5-4. It was tough on Jose Mourinho’s side after Eden Hazard had given 10-man Chelsea a 2-1 lead in the third minute of extra-time. And they held out until Javi Martinez equalised with virtually the last kick of the 120 minutes.
F ernando Torres had got the Blues off to a great start with a goal in just the eighth minute. But Franck Ribery had equalised early in the second half. Mourinho sprang a surprise in his line up as David Luiz returned, with Torres up front. There was no place for Juan Mata though, the Spaniard yet again confined to the bench.
The Special One’s record against Bayern coach Pep Guardiola needed improvement, with only three wins from their 15 clashes.
The German side were without skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger, though, as they went looking for revenge for their defeat by the Londoners in the 2012 Champions League final. Chelsea’s last appearance in the Super Cup saw them thrashed 4-1 by Atletico Madrid last season. But they got off to a much better start last night.

Torres set up Hazard, who skipped past several tackles and passed to Andre Schurrle. The German’s cross sat up perfectly for Torres, who swivelled to hit the ball first time, finding the net via the inside of the post. Chelsea looked dangerous on the break and Torres should have done better than shoot across goal with Hazard unmarked. But Guardiola’s team were still a danger and Petr Cech was forced to make a smart save from Ribery after he had been set up by Arjen Robben.
Chelsea had another escape when Ribery cut inside and this time drilled his low shot just wide of the post. Torres looked in the mood, though, and produced another moment of magic to fiNd space from Schurrle’s pass, only for his shot to fizz off target.
But Chelsea’s lead lasted just two minutes into the second half and predictably, it was the livewire Ribery who undid them. The Frenchman picked up the ball wide on the left and cut in, but this time he unleashed a drive from 30 yards that screamed past Cech at the near post. Chelsea were hanging on, as wave after wave of red attacks swarmed around them, just as they did that night in May 2012.
Chelsea wasted a chance when David Alaba lost the ball to leave Oscar clear. But the Brazilian let keeper Manuel Neuer back to save. Neuer then saved from Hazard and tipped Branislav Ivanovic’s header away before Luiz thumped a header against the woodwork. But Chelsea were forced to play the last five minutes of normal time with only 10 men after an ugly tackle by Ramires earned him a second yellow card. But the Blues hung on to force extra-time and shocked the European champions by taking the lead. Hazard cut in from the left and fired in a shot which Neuer should have stopped but somehow it slipped past him and in.Cech produced two magnificent saves to deny Martinez and then Mario Mandzukic. But with virtually the last kick Martinez found a way through to take the game to penalties.
Though it wasn’t meant to be, the final product was still one of the best UEFA Super Cups in recent memory, the highlights from which are above. For the first time in their club’s history, Bayern Munich claimed the Super Cup, with Pep Guardiola winning his first trophy in Germany.
